How It Works
Vaccinations are divided into "core" (required for all pets) and "non-core" (based on lifestyle and risk). For dogs, core vaccines are DHPP and Rabies. For cats, FVRCP and Rabies. Puppies and kittens need a series of shots starting at 6-8 weeks because maternal antibodies from nursing gradually fade, and we need to catch the window when they wear off. This is why multiple boosters are given 3-4 weeks apart. After the initial series, adult boosters are given every 1-3 years depending on the vaccine type and local regulations. Rabies vaccination is required by law in most US states. Over-vaccination concerns have led the veterinary community to develop evidence-based protocols — your vet can titer-test (blood test) to check if boosters are truly needed.
