How It Works
The general rule is that dogs need about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight daily, and cats need about 3.5-4.5 ounces per 5 pounds. However, pets on wet food get significant hydration from their food (wet food is ~75% water) and need less from their bowl. Cats are descended from desert animals and have a naturally low thirst drive, which is why they are prone to chronic dehydration and kidney problems — this is one strong argument for feeding wet food to cats. The "skin tent test" is a simple at-home dehydration check: gently pinch the skin on the back of your pet's neck and release. If it snaps back immediately, hydration is good. If it stays "tented" for more than 2 seconds, your pet may be dehydrated and needs immediate attention.
