How It Works
The first year of pet ownership is typically the most expensive due to one-time costs like adoption fees, spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, and supplies (crate, bed, bowls, leash, collar, litter box, etc.). Shelter adoption is generally much cheaper than buying from a breeder because adoption fees ($50-300) typically include spay/neuter, first vaccinations, and microchipping — all of which would cost $500+ separately. After the first year, ongoing costs drop but still average $1,000-2,000 per year for dogs and $800-1,200 for cats. The biggest hidden cost is veterinary care, especially as pets age. Starting a pet savings fund from day one is a wise financial strategy.
