How It Works
Indoor cats live longer (15-20 years vs 5-10 for outdoor cats) but need environmental enrichment to prevent boredom, stress, and behavioral problems. The key concept is "vertical territory": cats think in three dimensions, so a small apartment with tall cat trees and wall shelves offers more usable space than a large flat room. Every cat needs access to: a high perch (cats feel safe when elevated), window views (their version of television), scratching surfaces (both vertical and horizontal), hiding spots for when they need alone time, and interactive play (at least 15 minutes of wand-toy play daily). In multi-cat homes, resources should never be concentrated in one spot — distribute litter boxes, food stations, and perches throughout the home to prevent resource guarding.
