How It Works

Dogs burn calories during walks based on their weight, speed, and terrain. A 50-pound dog walking at a moderate pace burns roughly 3 calories per kilogram per hour. Hilly terrain and sand increase energy expenditure by 40-50% compared to flat pavement. Temperature matters too: dogs pant to cool down (they barely sweat), so hot weather makes exercise more taxing. As a rule of thumb, if pavement is too hot for your hand after 7 seconds, it is too hot for your dog's paws. Most healthy adult dogs need 30-60 minutes of exercise daily, split into 2 walks.
