How It Works
Dog food portions should be based on your dog's Resting Energy Requirement (RER), which is calculated as 70 times body weight in kilograms raised to the 0.75 power. This baseline is then multiplied by an activity factor. Puppies under 1 year need 30-50% more calories for growth. Senior dogs (8+ years) need about 10% fewer calories as their metabolism slows. Spayed or neutered dogs typically need 15% fewer calories. Always transition food gradually over 7-10 days to avoid digestive upset. If your dog is gaining or losing weight unexpectedly, adjust portions by 10% and reassess after 2 weeks.
