How It Works
The old "multiply by 7" rule for converting dog years to human years is a myth. A 2019 study published in Cell Systems by researchers at UC San Diego found that dogs age much faster in their first few years, then slow down. Using DNA methylation (epigenetic) data, the formula is approximately: human age = 16 times the natural logarithm of dog age, plus 31. This means a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 31-year-old human, not a 7-year-old. Dog size matters too: larger breeds age faster after reaching maturity, which is why Great Danes live 8-10 years while Chihuahuas can reach 17+.
