How It Works
Cats are NOT small dogs when it comes to medications. Their livers lack key enzymes (glucuronyl transferase) that dogs and humans use to break down many drugs, making cats extremely sensitive to substances that are safe for other species. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the most notorious example: a single regular-strength tablet can kill a cat. Aspirin, which is commonly given to dogs, has a half-life of 40+ hours in cats compared to 7 hours in dogs, making toxic accumulation likely. Permethrin, found in many dog flea products, causes fatal seizures in cats. The safest approach is always to consult your veterinarian before giving your cat any medication, even OTC ones.
