How It Works
The golden rule of litter boxes is N+1: one box per cat, plus one extra. This reduces territorial disputes and gives every cat options. In multi-story homes, there should be at least one box per floor so cats do not have to travel far. Scoop at least once daily — cats are fastidious and may refuse to use a dirty box, leading to accidents elsewhere. Most behavioral "litter box problems" are actually human maintenance problems. Box size matters too: the box should be at least 1.5 times the length of your cat. Covered boxes trap odors (good for humans, bad for cats) and can make some cats feel trapped. If your cat starts avoiding the box, try switching to an uncovered box before assuming a medical issue.
