How It Works
Cats are obligate carnivores and have unique nutritional needs different from dogs. The Resting Energy Requirement formula (70 x body weight in kg raised to the 0.75 power) provides a baseline, which is then adjusted for activity, age, and reproductive status. Indoor cats are prone to obesity because they get far less exercise than outdoor cats, so they need fewer calories. Neutered and spayed cats have lower metabolic rates and need roughly 15% fewer calories. Wet food provides hydration (important since many cats do not drink enough water) and is generally lower in carbohydrates. Free-feeding dry food is a common cause of feline obesity. Measured meals twice daily are recommended for most adult cats.
